The backpack contains 3 gold capacity upgrades, a tank and a pump.
I collected about 400 buckets of lava in my backpack.
I put my backpack on the ground.
Pump interaction with the environment is enabled.
All 400 buckets became 1 block and the backpack was empty.
I am unable to recreate in 1.21, but I also have no idea if that's the version where you experienced this. Could you provide additional info regarding versions? Also I feel this is likely some kind of mod interaction issue so it's likely it will only happen with some mod that you have in your modpack.

As said I am unable to recreate the issue on that version so I will need to understand what's the minimum set of mods with which you are able to recreate, but very likely that other mod that causes this issue will need to fix the issue on their side - they likely make it so that the block position where lava is placed reports that there's no lava there which causes backpack to place lava there and so on. but possibly there's some other issue going on here.
the placement of lava did not occur block by block, the reservoir emptied instantly
