I think making the default campfire unlit when you place it and then being able to light it with sticks would fit with the mod. Potentially also making the campfire burn out after an hour and then it automatically breaking and dropping a single charcoal
I approve of the change to have the campfire burn out, but could you at least give a config option whether or not it'll be destroyed after going out? I'd like to be able to reuse it...maybe at the very least by adding another log to it or something similar.

In case you do decide to implement this, make a custom copy of the CampfireTileEntity class that Forge has as well as a custom copy of the CampfireBlock class and then tweak it since trying to use the original CampfireTileEntity will cause you issues in my experience.
i'd love to see some in-world-interaction like putting down a log and some dried gras; light it by repeated clicking sticks on it which get then consumed.
the mod NoTreePunching offers a strange Firestarter Bow which just spawns a campfire. StoneAge could achieve a bit more immersion through in world interaction
