With the new addition of a way to limit the drawers to one stack, could we maybe have further downgrade decrements to eventually allow only one item per drawer? I recently was looking for a mod that adds such a one item storage to use as a item buffer for a build.

This would be along the lines of a fractional downgrade that's been proposed a few times. The contributor of the single stack upgrade did attempt to implement that, but it was proving unwieldy.

It might still get added, but I've got no definite timeframes. At minimum, I'd want to get the ender upgrade finished first.
