Hey,
would you consider updating the blocks' textures? I have some ideas:

1. instead of blocks, using the redstone torch/repeater but with a different color so it's not a full block and more like a "device." Just showing some examples of what other mods did to get an idea of what I mean
   

2. if you don't want a 3d object, would you be open to if others maybe shared their designs for a full block texture?
