After all of these versions, I just now noticed the iron furnace doesn't accept input from any of its sides. I put a hopper on the top, back, left and right, and it doesn't accept the type of input a normal furnace accepts, nor does it output from the bottom. This makes it a very costly furnace, that is only slightly better than a normal furnace in fuel consumption and smelting with no way to automate it.
