Since a normal piece of coal/charcoal can smelt 8 items, it doesn't make sense to get 9 pieces which can smelt 1 item each. Instead, you should only get 8 pieces. To turn the tiny pieces into their original item, you would place them in the crafting grid the same way you place planks to make a chest.
