The current 1.12 build provides for Chest crafting only from Planks (at a cost of 8 logs per chest). In 1.7.10, Chests were craftable either from Planks or Lumber (both crafts giving only 1 chest).

Should return the Lumber recipe for chests and either remove the Planks recipe or adjust it to give 4 chests.
