Right-click and shift-right-click on animals both consume food

It appears that only shift-right-click has any utility. Why does right-click do anything? Seems like it's confusing to new players.
Right click without sneaking gives the vanilla hearts, but breeding or anything else doesn't seem to happen.
This is on the ATM Gravitas pack, version 1.9b
