When you allow a creeper or other explosion to blow up a barrel, the block will either be destroyed yielding no drops, or it will drop itself with all its contents sealed inside. I do not know how this worked in 1.7.10, however it seems more consistent with other containers for the barrel to have the usual chance of dropping itself, and having the items contained always drop.
