Bricks used to be unobtainable in TFC because, as brick blocks were in the vein "construction" blocks and therefore not gravity affected, they could be used to make super early non-gravity affected blocks to build with, before you could even get metal tools.

Now that mortar (which require metal tools and flux to make) is back, unfired bricks could be knapped and fired to obtain vanilla bricks that could be crafted with mortar to get the brick block, the same way fire bricks are made. The difference being that these are purely decorative like stone bricks are, and not apt for blast furnace construction.

The benefits of this are more building material variety for later points in the game because fire bricks are prohibitely expensive to build with, and also improving out-of-the-box mod compatibility as there are a handful of mods out there that use vanilla bricks on recipes, particularly tech mods for some of their multiblocks.
