What problem or issue would this enhancement solve?
Each sand/gravel price give a number of tries in the sluice, in classic you could see how much tries there was left in GUI and only put sand/gravel when it's worth, otherwise one piece would just a a single try is a stack is standing in the stream. In TNG, as there is no visual indication on the level of the sluice, so you do not know when to add more to get the max number of tries and you don'e even know if it is processing. Also, the items drop on the ground, so you have to go down the hole to pick it up. -
Describe the feature itself
Add visual indication, for example add sand/gravel texture in the steps to indicate how full the sluice is, each step could represent 5 tries.
The items found could also be represented visually in the sluice, for example as a piece poking out of the water, right click or shift right click to pick up all items, max inventory could be 8, so one item by step, and drop as it is doing now if it is full.
Edit : instead of something poking out of the water, it could be a "shiny" particle effect to indicate item in the sluice inventory.

we could make it only accept items if it has room, and just allow for overflow (i.e. if it's at 29/30, pick up one 10, then stay at 39/30, not allowing any more pickups until under 30)
