Sheep unable to eat andisol grass and crops don't grow.

We've decided to try and live on a volcanic island but our sheep won't eat the andisol grass and crops don't appear to grow.
Also, when we place regular dirt down to create a farm, if grass grows before we prepare the soil then it is converted to an andisol grass block.
