A Vanilla wooden axe has 7 damage at 0.8 speed while an obsidian greatsword (iron handle) has 10 damage at 0.3 speed. This seems super weak in actual use, even with the sweep damage.

Obsidian variants are intended to be slow.

@mickelus I understand that. However, compare the damage per second and you will see why no one would ever use your obsidian greatsword. Now all of the numbers below are vs. an unarmored target, but you get the idea. The point is that all except seven variants of the vanilla tools do more damage per second than the obsidian greatsword which makes it basically useless in its current state; especially when you consider that you need diamonds to even get obsidian and a diamond pick is more effective than the obsidian greatsword. The only way it would be useful at the current speed is with a damage buff or some form of damage that bypasses armor.
