Hardened leather items are currently made by using the crafting table. This makes them both expensive and ineffective. Hardened leather armor currently requires 24 leather, making it 8 times more expensive.
If making a new type of knapping menu comes out as too difficult, try switching to an anvil recipe. E.g. Applying hardened leather onto regular leather armor to make it stronger.
