Going to wing it - I think it will grow 3 high like sugarcane - the top one will fruit.
Will drop itself if un-fruited - can be replanted or turned in to cactus green.
Fruited part will drop prickly pear - can be eaten but will damage player a little. When cooked it will no longer damage player and give better hunger stuff. Gens in volcanic desert.

Added textures - need an early night will make all this later.
