Problem description
Recently in the mod, I've made a couple of notable changes to compat materials:
- Compat alloys now are available if any of their components are available
- I've added a few new compat alloys for newer alloys.
As I've been considering metal for this mod and other mods of mine, I have noticed that some of our compat materials are pretty uncommon. In particular:
- Tungsten: basically just comes from End: Reborn
- Platinum: shows up in a bunch of smaller mods, but not many well known mods.
Suggested solution
I think it would be worth removing the dedicated materials for tungsten and platinum. I'll keep melting and casting around as the ores are not entirely unheard of, they just seem pretty uncommon to have dedicated materials that show in our documentation and design guides.
This change would notably give a bit more space in the core mod for compat materials without cluttering the list up too much. It also notably makes it easier to get all materials in the mod for ore hunters, and gives addons a bit more space to do something unique by making a platinum or tungsten based Tinkers addon.
As far as the trait go, I will move them to another material that has less interesting traits. In particular:
- I have not been happy with invar's trait for awhile, so will likely move tungsten's trait to invar.
- Platinum's harvest trait is kinda basic and has a lot of overlap with seared stone, so I might just ditch it. I could also see putting it on a new compat harvest material for aluminum.
- Platinum's ranged trait really only fits it or gold. Not sure I want a gold bow material, but I'd consider it with this change.
Alternatives considered
Nothing prevents me from leaving the ores as is. However, I would rather have a solid design for a set of compat materials that are likely to show up than several compat materials I am not happy with.
Additional context
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1m9R4WtC5HVwBC_Bd0sjCrKmaf6e3F13Cq8kvbms9HVA/edit?usp=sharing is a spreadsheet I maintain of mods that are notable (at least to me) that have the various ores.
Let me know if you have any thoughts on this.

No! They are certainly basic materials even though they are just in a punch of small mods. Of course if I cannot change your mind please don't remove their molten fluids.
The molten fluids are sticking around regardless. The question is whether to move the materials and traits to a material more likely to be in packs. Because I honestly have never seen either since 1.16 in a pack I played.
After considering it further, I think its definitely better to drop the two materials. Reason being they make up the entirety of tier 2 compat harvest materials, and with how rare they are that means the vast majority of players end up with no tier 2 compat harvest materials as a result.
Between that, and the many new compat materials I have planned (ones that have specific mods I know which provide them), I think its best to let tungsten and platinum go. I do plan to release a thingpack alongside the update though that will let you either bring them back if your pack depended on them, or form the basis for someone to write their own addon reimagining them.
