Problem description
Battlesign is a great tool, and with some luck, it can even replace a shield by dropping good materials. However, its Bonking modifier actually has no benefits and only poses risks. So I hope to allow to remove the Bonking modifier on the Battlesign.
Suggested solution
Allow Offhanded modifier to be applied to Battlesign.
Alternatives considered
Remove the Bonking modifier of Battlesign.

The bonking modifier knocks targets away and damages them, how is that no benefits? Battle signs have a cross between dual wielding and shielding, that's their main purpose.
If to just want a normal shield, plate shields give you all the same functionality except you can choose your mateirals, the melee weapon part of the battle sign is pointless if you only want a shield.
I'll note offhanded should work fine on the battle sign, it just will do what offhanded always does: disable all right click functionality (notably including the blocking) while in the mainhand and a filled offhand. It's not what you seem to want
But I sometimes hurt villagers because of Bonking, that is annoying. In addition, when I put down my the sign, additional knockback can sometimes be inconvenient for combat. The purpose for me to use Battlesign is 4 material modifiers. I think it is better to give a way to disable the Bonking modifier.
Again, if you want a shield that doesn't damage/knock back the target after block, normal shields do that. Removing bonking from battle signs makes it a normal shield, which you can get already.
Disabling traits goes against the design of tinkers. If something has a trait, it should always have the trait.
Consider also shield strap, a leggings modifier that lets you more easily swap your offhand item.
If you consider the entire reason to use a battle sign a disadvantage, then sure. Or, maybe try considering it an advantage like everyone else does.
I still don't get why you insist on using a battle sign if you want it to do nothing more than a regular shield. We have so many regular shield options.

1 Ability Slot with 3 Defence Slots, two plates (both sign and handle) and double Rebalnced modifier are the advantages of Battlesign. These advantage make it better than other shield. That is why I want to use Battelsign. Bonking modifier makes Battlesign not as perfect as I want.
