Food should rot after a few in-game days if it's not refrigerated. To refrigerate food, it can be stored in an ice box that is kept cold with ice cubes, which will randomly drop from ice cubes.

Rotten food will always poison the player if eaten, so it's necessary to refrigerate it. It will have a greenish overlay that's applied automatically.
