Temperature System

Let me prefix, I love the idea of temperature in games. However, it often ends up badly done and yeah...
If you ever happen to add a food-spoiling system or the like, add food freezing please :)
Anyway, my current issue. I dug a little hole into a mountain, put a door, put a heating coil, turned it on with redstone. Worked fine enough, though I still got different temperatures (why?) ranging from medium to hot apparently. Then put a hole into the ceiling, placed glass, to try around with that and what the wiki means with "path to the block". Okay, broke the glass again and placed the stone back in the ceiling, however I'm still cooling? Nowhere in the room seems to be warm now, even tried breaking the heating coils and replacing them (yes they are turned on)
Maybe thats because it turned night in the meantime though. But then again, at night 4 heating coils in a 4x4x3 room aren't enough to keep me warm?.?
Can heating coils overheat you and cooling coils overcool? How about a temperature sensor in world so I can regulate them on/off if so?
