It is terribly obnoxious to place curves and switches in areas where the ground isn't all there. I always end up building more ground than I need and then removing the excess.

What I envision is something akin to the way the Builder's Wand from Extra Utilities works.

When I'm holding a piece of track it shows highlighted blocks where the track will go.

Does this make sense?
