Snakes turned into items by right-clicking them don't turn back into snakes when placed on the ground. Tortoises work fine, snake eggs work fine, snakes caught in cages work fine, snakes gotten from the Creative inventory work, but captured snakes with a "male" or "female" marker don't. They vanish from the hand as if used, spawning nothing.
