The crack hammer should be able to crack both standard coal and charcoal into dust. Also, the lava/water springs feel a little too 'cheaty' and much too easy to obtain VERY early game. (finding a broken nether portal will provide most of the materials if not all)

That is the way I designed the blocks and items. I won't be changing them.
