1.8 clients are unable to see maps in item frames on a 1.12.2 server.

Players on 1.8 and 1.8.9 have informed me that they are unable to see maps inside item frames on my server (MC 1.12.2). I use image boards for a guest quiz so it is important players are able to see and read information on a map in an item frame before they can continue as a member. However with this client version, they say they only see the item frame.
@Gerrygames Would it be possible to add backwards compatibility support so players on 1.8 can see maps? :(
Edit: Quickly testing on 1.10, maps also seem to be not working with this client version.

Gallery of images taken on version 1.8, 1.9, 1.10, & I believe 1.11, with what it actually is suppose to look like at the bottom with 1.12.2.
Could you try using the latest development build of ViaBackwards? The map colors added in 1.12 were not being rewritten in previous versions.
