The metal pieces used to shape the blocks etc. are called Dyes

Dye is used to colour objects, I think you mean Die, as in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_(manufacturing)

Would you believe I looked that up very carefully to begin with and then made a mess of it :)
