I'm not completely sure about these but it seems that when I do //set horizontally it takes 20x longer to do half the amount of blocks than if I was doing it vertically and in many cases temporarily crashes my low power server where a vertical wouldn't. Also I did a big copy paste the other day and it seemed to have random blocks missing in places?

This is a rather ambiguous report and doesn't actually present anything "fixable". The reason that "horizontal" operations might take more time than vertical ones is because they affect a lot more chunks, but that's purely speculation on my part.
