I'd call that "denied". JEC wouldn't work with EMI.

JEC adds a gui that allows you to input recipes and see the crafting chain plus the input items. It allows you to check what you already have in your inventory and adds a small module that opens when you open an inventory or some workstation.

It also allows for placeholders that you can use to combine multiple items in one recipe tree. Plus a few other things that I don't know enough about to describe them.

I would somewhat describe JEC as EMI (at least the calculator part) but less fancy.

It has a mode that allows you to open the calculator via hotkey, and one where you need to craft an item for it.

As for issues I know of:

Not all recipe types can be easily added, it usually has a + symbol that allows you to quickly add a recipe, including from non-vanilla crafting stations (most do have it and it's working for almost all of them (create mixing isn't)), but for eg the brewing stand and the (blue skies) alchemy table that button is missing.
