Massive lag spike on chat updates

I'm experiencing massive lag spikes when the chat updates on a server or in a singleplayer world (either I send a message or someone else does).
FPS drops from 140+ do about 30 for a moment then goes back up.
This issue came around since I updated to 2.5.4 (was running 2.5.2 before)
