What happened?

Same here with ATM 9 Sky. I think it's the minecraft itself that doesn't not optimise the code of changing language (Just guessing). I received Out of Memory Error. No Heap Space. Perhaps doubling your memory allocation would help? But I'll just change the language in the start menu rather than doubling my memory.
