I have the necessary items to complete the task (4xGrass and 4xFertilizer), but whatever I do, the task does not count the items. I tried opening a chest, throwing the items on the floor and closing the game.

Could you take a screeenshot of the chapter this quest is in? The reason this happens most often is because not all of the required quests are completed.
