When you destroy dirt with the obsidian shovel it creates piles of dirt instead of dirt, this seems off since it is a higher tier than diamond.

All shovels should give piles of dirt. If you use a shovel you will get 4 piles and if you don't you will get 3.

Iron shovel gives back whole dirt. Maybe this is the issue then.
