I can load into the world, but I am stuck floating in a void. The chunks never load in and when I exit the game, it gets stuck on "Saving world" indefinitely. Loading backups or new worlds works fine

Can you please provide a log file from when this happens? There's not much that can be done to try to figure out your issue without more information.

Though, I should add, when I leave the game it will never close. It just gets stuck on freezing world indefinitely. The game was closed via task manager

I see you are using Optifine. Please note that Optifine is not officially supported (see #436). Could you try to get the issue to happen without Optifine installed?
