In the Tinker's tab, there's a quest asking you to make "Mighty Smelting" book, which you do by pouring seared stone over a book.

The quest that unlocks right after asks you to make a proper smeltery. However, since the seared melter is disabled in Expert, you need to have a proper smeltery before actually crafting the book, so the 2 quests might be out of order.

They made sense in regular E6 with the melter but it's not the case here.

Another option would be to allow making seared stone inside the Magma Crucible, which you can't right now
