Lament Saplings won't grow

Describe your issue.
I purchased Lament Saplings from the Market npc and planted several around. They're located at y=110 in a Seasonal Birch Forest biome. Planted on grass. I've ensured they have plenty of room around them and I've spammed them with bonemeal, left them for hours while I putter around nearby and none have grown.
I cheated in some Tree Fertilizer and that does force them to grow, but as this is gated behind Silk Touch for the coral, it's a bit inadequate for someone like myself who just wants to use that lovely purple/blue wood color.

I can grow them with bonemeal on grass in the overworld just fine, until y level 105 or above, then it stops working for me
