The modpack held a vote of 4 mod removal from Sept 23 to Oct 20. Each player could vote and comment (argument) for each mod for 7 days, in GitHub or Discord.
Here are the combined results of the vote, with users' arguments listed.
More Chat History #731
60% of voters suggested the mod to be removed. (total 163 votes)
Remove
- The perception and minimalism of being an optimization-targeted modpack
- People's personal use
- Some people wanting to use more advanced chat-related mods (which this may conflict with).
Keep
- Mod being actually useful in minigame servers (besides survival)
- People not realizing mod's usefulness until they need it
- Logs in general being hard to reach
- The mod being small and cross-version compatible
Notes
- Some people suggested using alternative mods in FO
- Some suggested implementing this feature into other mods that already exist in FO
- People may have been confused by the use of emoji in the vote
- The vote ended a few hours early, which might have skewed some results
Vertict
Arguments against removal were more convincing in this case, so the mod will stay.
Alternative mods are not currently considered, as they do change the vanilla look-and-feel drastically and must be learned. Simpler features, like keeping command history across sessions is no longer necessary and keeping chat history was never intended to be in FO. See #572 and #388 for additional context.
Fadeless #737
41% of voters suggested the mod to be removed. (total 144 votes)
Remove
- Mod is "useless" as saving 2 seconds may not seem significant for a lot of users
- Jarring visual effect
Keep
- Slower computers
- 2 seconds being significant
Notes
- Some people suggested alternative ways to speed up the launch or make the animation start earlier
- Some users suggested the mod to have an option or slider to customize the effect
- Some users suggested a Forge-like splash screen instead
- On Discord, the mod now had a GIF showcase, and used better voting emoji, which might've improved voting results
Verdict
The mod will stay for now, but adding options or using alternatives are being considered to achieve people's needs better.
It became clear that most people liked the mod, but the visual change is significant, so I'll investigate whether some alternative mod can be better to benefit both parties, or some options could be introduced into the mod. For example, the modpack may reduce the animation from 2 seconds to 0.5 instead of 0.
AntiGhost
Vote was cancelled.
Remove (my arguments)
- Mojang claims the issue is already fully fixed since 1.19
- 1.20.2 changed the aspects of chunk loading and networking, which contributes to the assumption that this has been fully fixed now
- Even if not fully fixed, a "normal lag" is more likely than a ghost block nowadays and this mod doesn't help with the lag itself
- Mod itself requires manual operation and can't be automated
- Users may already be used to teleporting or relogging to workaround the issue
- Some servers may kick you for it via anticheats, e.g. Hypixel
- I personally was able to use and benefit from it there previously but can now confirm the kick
- Some servers kick for overuse of the command instead
Keep (my arguments)
- Users with poor network connection may experience "ghost blocks" and can use this to fix it
- The mod's workaround is intended to be less server-invasive than a relog/teleport
- The mod is usable in situations where a relog/teleport is not possible
- FO added instructions/link into pause menu bottom corner
- Bindable keybind
Verdict
Considering the arguments for removal, especially concerns with anticheats, I decided to skip the vote and remove the mod directly. Mod has been removed since 5.4.0.
Fabrishot #741
38% of voters suggested the mod to be removed. (total 115 votes)
Remove
- No noticable difference in quality
- Lack of usage
- Lack of knowledge the mod even existed
Keep
- Detailed screenshots of builds
- Cropping elements out of a detailed screenshot
- Mod helps with getting consistent high-res screenshots when the physical screen does not have high resolution
- Screenshots with shaders
- The created file sizes are not actually that big and can be reduced
- Taking high-res screenshots to zoom into details later
Notes
- There was a concern that the vote seemed to be about removing the screenshot feature in general, which is available in vanilla. However, after adding a note about it, the future votes still did not have significantly more "remove" votes.
- Discoverability was a major concern
Verdict
I think it is surprising that most voters decided to keep the mod, despite many not even knowing it was there. However, there were also several good arguments for keeping the mod.
So indeed, the mod will be kept, and additional measures will be taken to ensure the users know about the mod's existence.
AdvancementInfo #744
32% of voters suggested the mod to be removed. (total 94 votes)
Remove
- Some had never used or seen the mod
- Some were concerned about seeing the requirements
- Larger screen to be unnecessary in vanilla
- Requirements to be out of scope
- Current mod "looks too technical"
- Bugs out MCCI
Keep
- Larger screen is a benefit for vanilla
- Requirements help vanilla
- Larger screen and requirements help with datapacks
Notes
- Additional details were added after several voters told that they were no idea what the mod did in the first place
- The majority who voted "keep" liked the idea but not the mod used. People seemed to prefer #702, which was also mentioned by me originally.
- Currently this mod and any of the alternatives are not yet updated to 1.20.2. Edit: just before I posted it, #746 got updated.
Verdict
No verdict yet, more evaluation and testing are needed.
- It was clear by the majority of argumenters that the UI of AdvancementInfo itself was not wanted, so that will no longer be considered.
- #702 was highly favored, however the lack of resource pack support is a major dealbreaker. While I reported it to the author, the mod has seemingly been around like that on Forge for 7 years, so I don't have high confidence the mod will be refactored to fix it soon.
- #746 is an option that will be tested soon, and people's feedback will determine whether it is good enough as an alternative.
- #60 does not show requirements, is not available on Modrinth, and is semi-abandonware.
- Overall it is important to note that any mod's requirement display can never be "perfect" because the technical system was not built this way to show every requirement in detail.
Additional notes
- I should do these votes more often, as the feedback I received was really helpful.
- One big bias concern is that there are some people who want FO to be "as minimal as OptiFine", and some people who like having various features. Balancing the actions to the modpack's goals is a hard but crucial task.
- 7 days is probably too much, as the majority of the feedback was given on the first 1-3 days. Although, at the beginning, several votes were equal and I did not want to change the duration mid-vote session.
- Should probably describe what each mod does on Discord as well, as I did not link to original issue there.
- Discord-specific emoji were good, as people understood the concepts "keep" and "remove" better. GitHub has no emoji workarounds at this time, but it has nowadays less activity anyway.
