Mid game power generation is boring and lasts too long

At the moment power gen in the mid game is numis all day every day. It's a big slump in progression.

There are alternitaves like the diesel generator but it's difficult to scale and when compared to numis is not worth the time and resource investment.

Some options are:

  • Nerf numis. (People would still spam them.)
  • Just outright remove numis. (Might cause a riot.)
  • Buff the diesel generator and oil tower output.
  • Make nuclearcraft reactors better.

  • Use modular machines to make a custom diesel gen that's actually good because GT isn't very configurable.

maybe not

A few ideas for boosting (mid) power gen:

  1. Boost the total amount of power for 1mb of LPG
import mods.gregtech.recipe.FuelRecipe;
import mods.gregtech.recipe.RecipeMaps;

var gas_fuels = RecipeMaps.GAS_TURBINE_FUELS;

var lpgFuelRecipe = FuelRecipe.create(<liquid:lpg>*1, 10, 512);
gas_fuels.addRecipe(lpgFuelRecipe);
  1. Boost the total amount of power for 1mb of Cetane Boosted Diesel
import mods.gregtech.recipe.FuelRecipe;
import mods.gregtech.recipe.RecipeMaps;

var diesel_fuels = RecipeMaps.DIESEL_GENERATOR_FUELS;

var nitroFuelRecipe = FuelRecipe.create(<liquid:nitro_fuel>*1, 20, 512);
diesel_fuels.addRecipe(nitroFuelRecipe);
  1. Boost the power of the basic solar panels. This is done in the config of SolarFlux. You will find several files ranging from 1.json to 8.json. Boost the generation of the first 5 or 6 to a more decent value.

I don't think solars need to be boosted - they shouldn't be a good option before lategame anyway.
Gas turbine fuels, absolutely - even if not to the level where they're actually competitive, currently they are completely useless.
Diesel - probably, although how much will need to be determined.

Boosting mid-game solars (but not too much) could be a good way to make sure that no single power gen is the ultimate meta and that several options should be combined to create a decent (mid-tier) power gen.

The problem with the current Numis Meta is that you're encouraged to set up DML as soon as possible (mainly around LV as that is when you get access to it). Because you get access to DML, and in turn Numis, so early in the game it makes it a lot easier to just scale that up rather than investing into a new source of power that would be marginally better. we could add 100 different sources for midgame power gen but the matter of the fact is that you'd have DML ready to scale up Numis use

My thoughts:

  1. Numi's are too easy to get going early on. I don't think they are broken, they have their place, they are invaluable EV-LuV gamepoint i.e. just prior to plasma/whatever. Maybe make them harder to get into - change the recipe for Lapidary Calbration to depend upon a material appropriate for their intended level.

  2. Magmatics are a viable early alternative at present but less glamorous. They are also supported will in the questline, especially with the enderpump. I know from experience, my 1st run of OF I didnt immediately jump straight into Nums.

  3. People love to use RF, central power buffer, easily moved around with power conduits etc.. What's the EU equivalent? seems to be more local power generation and storage? That makes things like diesel generators, engines etc. (Basically anything that produces EU) less favourable.

  4. There's a whole huge swathe of generators, from EU2, NC, EIO, Drac, that simply just don't get a mention. Why? because people love dynamos they are easy and produce lots of power and fill the gape till late game with relative ease. It's not unique to OF. Other packs, people scramble to get Extreme Reactors or Mek Gas/Fission Generators, skipping all the lower stuff where possible. We want POWER!!!

Seems to me we need a power progression strategy depicted in the pack, supported by quest line as the best way out of this. That would either support the current num approach or depict an alternative 'less boring one'.

Why not buff Nuclearcraft fission reactors, or possibly re add the molten salt reactors? The molten salt steam processing involves pushing high pressure steam through a series of heat exchanger, condenser, and turbine multiblocks, on top of the normal mechanics for active cooled reactors (oh, and you also have to route the hot coolant out od the reactor also). All in all the nuclearcraft MSR perfectly emodies the spirit of omnifactory through encouraging an additional level of complexity and rewarding automation of it sucessfully.

Yes please make a power progression system, i am getting tired of packs that leave me guessing as to what power gen I should be using at a given time and/or that only have a couple of good generators that you basically have to use to be efficient and leave all the others to rot. I want to be guided yet be able to explore all the options and by the end game, have a crazy hybrid power system producing 1m rf/t or more and yet it's still just barely chugging along for what I need. So far I am enjoying this pack and looking forward to wats in store for it moving forward.

Isn't the existence of more than one way of generating power by default a progression system?

There's not much guessing to be had. The optimal power progression system in Omnifactory:

  1. Steam Dynamos (early)
  2. Sets of Boiler + 2 Turbine Augmented Steam Dynamos (LV)
  3. Numismatic Dynamos (MV - LuV)
  4. Solars or Plasma (LuV - UV)
  5. Creative Power

Magmatics are available late in LV but running them is not lucrative when Numis are available so soon and are objectively better.
Diesel debuts at EV and even at maximum efficiency is middling at best. You already have Numis automated by now, and you need your diesel for Draconium later.

I want to be guided yet be able to explore all the options and by the end game, have a crazy hybrid power system producing 1m rf/t or more and yet it's still just barely chugging along for what I need.

You'll be generating 1M RF/t before you're out of LuV. By tank you've been doing chaotic tier fusion which sometimes requires 30 Billion RF for a single operation, and will probably have filled up a T7 Draconic ball (which holds 2.14 Trillion RF)

I don't know I just think that the other generators such as diesel should have more of a use.
Also how do you setup numis? I am starting hv now and just using magmatics.

commented

Automating Numis is automating DeepMobLearning. You use the lapidary augment and run them off diamonds.

Numis too OP... :(
May be nerf it, and use oil way?

The state of things and the rationale for why things are the way they are currently have been stated and repeated.

Plenty has been said already and I don't think anyone is adding anything meaningful to the discussion at this point.

I think this can reasonably be closed given the NC energy production rebalance from 8e0b410, since NC now bridges the energy production gap between numis and solar/plasma. This change makes it worthwhile to consider additional designs optimized for energy production rather than breeding, and incentivizes exploring HE fuels which would otherwise be less desirable.

I'm still open to the idea of MSRs if we can balance them nicely but we don't have any plans for those at this time.

Having thought about things more I would be open to a PR relating to enabling the Molten Salt Reactor. I don't think it would necessarily be super competitive with numismatics but it seems like a fun system for people to play around with if they want to. It doubles as an alternative to the usual cryolattice breeder reactor spam for processing fissile materials as well.
