[BUG] items being permently destroyed for no reason

right as I opened a crafting table, a fire zombie killed it instantly destroyed some items
to recreate
open a crafting table
instantly die via fire zombie
i expected to find my items on the ground

- Server or Singleplayer: Server
- Version the world was created on: 1.12.2
