I've been (making a slow attempt at) building a massive island now that I'm out of the earlygame and have some automation. Right now, from what I can tell, there are only four ways to produce dirt. All of them are relatively slow for their power cost or complexity.
- Composting organics with a Barrel (10:1)
- Composting organics with a Batch Composter (7:1@100%), combine with slag and sand.
- The Sludge Refiner (low chance)
- Coarse Dirt (2 Dirt + 2 Gravel) in the Crushing Macerator (yield 4)
While sheer scale trumps all, the Ex Nihilo barrels need an absurd quantity of farmland or other organic production to work. The second seems better on organic-to-dirt conversion, but aside from cake, there are no* compostables above 65% (~10:1) making it strictly inferior to the first. The sludge refiner has such a slow yield that it isn't even worth considering. Finally, the coarse dirt route relies on Cyclic's Crushing Macerator, which demands 10 seconds for a single block of dirt in profit.
The barrel option should probably not be changed due to it being the starter choice. The batch composter itself shouldn't be changed because the compost is an improved bonemeal, but the subsequent recipe could have its yield increased to compensate. The sludge refiner is beyond salvation, and the coarse dirt route feels particularly uninspiring. Dirt is too straightforward a block to give a dye recipe to.
Please add new methods, that will scale more sensibly, to produce dirt.
*There are compostables that have a yield of 85%, but they're all compacted block forms of other compostables, which would have a larger yield if separated first.

Didn't realize Snad existed when I wrote this. Still a little bit big on the barrel stack needed to get it working but the sugarcane farm is incomparably fast compared to prior systems I'd made.
Reopening this, because having 127 barrels all producing dirt simultaneously is causing some sort of stability issue to my friend accessing the server remotely.
Perhaps a extruding recipe could be added to make dirt, which should be be a lot less laggy, though ultimately anything that's pushed far enough becomes laggy.
