R -> Middle mouse

It doesn't conflict with that but you do pickup the patterns when you do it which is kind of annoying. It currently conflicts with using 'R' in REI to pull up a recipe, which I consider a much bigger issue.

Would this conflict with AE2s "change amount" middle click action in the pattern terminal? (since that defaults to MMB as well)
