Rain/Thunder Makes Nights Bright as if Full Moon

Describe the bug

I’m using a custom config because the default sun is bright enough to give skeletons a tan. This setup removes auto-exposure and tweaks luminance to something your eyes can actually survive so a moonless night is, well… dark.

However, the moment it rains or thunders, the clouds appear to throw a wild moonlight rave, adding luminance to the world as if there’s a full moon hiding up there somewhere. The moonphase brightness settings are politely ignored, and the darkness you were enjoying is replaced by suspiciously bright storm clouds.

Describe your Minecraft setup

  • Minecraft: Neoforge 1.20.1-47.1.106
  • Mods:
    • Embeddium 0.3.3.31
    • Oculus 1.7.0
    • Commit 482 Bliss

Steps to reproduce the bug

  1. Install Bliss and its required mods.
  2. Use these shader settings:
EMISSIVE_TYPE=3
POM_DEPTH=1.0
MOB_SSS=true
Specular_Reflections=true
FAR_BLUR_ONLY=true
TAA_UPSCALING=true
LARGE_WAVE_DISPLACEMENT=true
CHOOSE_RANDOM_WEATHER_PROFILE=true
moon_illuminance=30.0
MATERIAL_AO=true
BIOME_TINT_WATER=true
TRANSLUCENT_COLORED_SHADOWS=true
AUTO_EXPOSURE=false
ORB_Y=250
END_STORM_DENSTIY=0.1
reflection_quality=15.0
sun_illuminance=800.0
SSS_TYPE=3
POM=true
THE_ORB=true
BLOOMY_FOG=0.5
Sky_reflection=true
ORB_G=0.00
Porosity=true
MIN_LIGHT_AMOUNT=0.0
MAX_ITERATIONS=60
BLOOMY_PARTICLES=true
ORB_ColMult=10.0
  1. Set the time to midnight and add 1d until you get a moonless night. Bask in the beauty of a truly dark and atmospheric world.
  2. Now set the weather to rain or thunder.
  3. Watch in confusion as the clouds become inexplicable light sources. Wonder why the moon is suddenly “back” at full brightness. Begin questioning the laws of nature.
