The compass in the Hud has the needle pointed to the west when F3 shows "Facing: east". The opposite occurs for east/west.
This is in version 5.0-beta2.

It works like a real compass which is the needle points north.

So in your case it is indicating that north is to your left, which is true when you are facing east.

Yes I know it exists, but what does it have to do with this issue?

I'm an idiot and so embarrassed. I've become accustomed to a mod I've used in the past that worked the way I described and have entirely forgotten how a compass works. If I could delete this issue, I would! So sorry for the trouble.
