Steps to reproduce

I want to rename Miscellaneous to Misc. Seems no way to do that. I can create a new Misc category but when I try to move items over it creates a new "Items" category instead.

The names are decided by Blizzard, not us, and we do not truncate or modify names as names are localized. If there is no item in the list, you can drag (drag and hold, not pick up) an item into the text box placeholder.

This is a known bug -- don't drag items to the "Items" header text, drag it over the list of items.

What if there is no list for a new category? I didn't see the tooltip change to tell me to hit shift, although I may have missed it.

Also in general, I would suggest picking shorter names by default when possible to avoid truncation. Misc, Trades, Pets, etc.
