new open-source license

deciding on a new license: I'd suggest resuming the BSD-2-Clause (a.k.a. Simplified BSD), or maybe switching to MIT or Apache 2.0
Those aren't the only options of course, we're open to suggestions
We've also seen GPL suggested
What is the current state of the licensing questions?
(I'm all for GPL, but any open source license will do)
I don't know if I can comment here, but actually modifying ARR code is illegal either. So it seems that we have few choice:
- Drop the commits after license changed to ARR now or later, in case of oscarucb shows up and asks for removal, and then we can choose license. Or
- Change the license now because ARR code is not so much and modified since then.
maybe GPL can solve this problem forever :p
I believe the most correct thing to do is to revert all ARR commits, which would put us back into BSD, and then we can choose a better license going forward
However, that's potentially an awful lot of work, and we don't even know if oscarucb will ever come back and ever care to press their claim over their code and license choice (we've at-mentioned them several times, so it's not like we're trying to hide anything)
I thought I had, but I can't find any emails or private messages
I found them at https://www.wowace.com/members/oscarucb and https://www.curseforge.com/members/oscarucb
I've sent them this private message
Howdie oscarucb,
Thanks so much for saving my SavedInstances addon from abandonment all those years ago
Since then even more people have become interested in keeping this addon aliveIt's been brought to our attention that you changed the original license from BSD to All-Rights-Reserved:
#54
#62This puts recent and future contributions to SavedInstances at risk, and we were hoping you could weigh in
Would you be willing to re-license your code under the BSD license as per the original project, or under some other open-source license? https://opensource.org/licenses
Or do you wish us to remove your contributions to SavedInstances, which is your intellectual property, and perfectly reasonable, understandable, and within your rights to request?
Any indication from you either way would be very helpful for us
We can continue this conversation in private here, or perhaps in public over here: #62
Cheers!
While i know i don't have the features SI does (i'm getting there) - I've got mine under BSD and have tried to keep the code clean and in separate files. I had actually started it about a year or so ago because SI was (or so i thought) abandoned.
It's actually getting to a point now where I'd likely for a 2.0 and do a rewrite on some things as i've mostly just coded moving from feature to feature. Let me know if you'd like to discuss if oscarucb doesn't respond?
