When renaming a workflow, any workflow link dropdown with the old workflow name appears to be cleared (because no dropdown entry matches the new name), but the links still exist.

It would make sense to look through the workflow links and update them with the new name too. "Run workflow" effects could also be updated (unsure if this is desirable however), "Run item workflow" cannot be updated due to the nature of the effect.
