this one was originally intended for off world use, then i saw that there was quite a science value loss if you transmit rather than store and recover.
so i just use it for rolling around kerbal and when i hit a new biom i collect up data and recover the device.
i plan on making another one for off world use that will use the same type of locomotion and be manned and will have the ability to dock with a lander/rover that will be able to transfer data and return for full data value.
or if you prefer you can just transmit the data and take the data point loss.
this one uses the thermo electric source for battery charging, but i may try to build one that uses solar regeneration of a large bank of batteries so that it can operate day and night, or uses smaller batteries and just sleeps at night.
i am going to guess that the reason i have never seen NASA or anyone else talking about a rover with this kind of locomotion is that the bearings on the gyros would give out very quickly even if they were using some kind of mag-lev bearings.
