1. take a wand that has charges on it. put it in the left hand (offhand)
2. take a normal item like a apple and put it in the right hand
3. using the wand will consume the right hand object but take a charge off the left hand. (I think only on the last charge will it destroy the item in the right hand. and the wand doesn't disappear just the right hand item gets eaten)

This looks to be resolved, though the behavior is still really awkward.
