This is a set of datapacks for Nether survival. There are no new recipes, instead there are a few changes to existing mechanics and a couple new mechanics. Be warned that these datapacks are quite a grind.
Currently, there are 13 datapacks in the set. Each change is a separate datapack so that you can disable the ones you don't like or that conflict with other datapacks.
Here's what each of them does:
Get Out of the Overworld
- Players in the Overworld are moved to the Nether.
Get Off the Roof
- Players on the Nether roof (above y128) are moved below.
Overworld Ruined Portals
- Ruined portals "leak" Overworld blocks, such as grass, flowers, and trees, instead of Nether blocks.
More Zombie Reinforcements
- This one requires some explanation. As you may already know, Zombies (and Zombie Villagers/Husks/Drowned) can have a chance to spawn "reinforcement" Zombies nearby when attacked. Interestingly, Zombified Piglins can also have this ability. Unfortunately, reinforcements can only ever be regular Zombies. This datapack adds a flat ~1% chance for reinforcements no matter what. These reinforcements can be Zombies, Zombie Villagers, or Husks/Drowned in certain biomes.
- tl;dr: You can spawn Zombie Villagers by attacking Zombified Piglins.
Nether Weakness Potions
- Small change to chest loot in the Nether: Nether fortress chests can occasionally have Spider Eyes.
- This helps make it possible to craft Fermented Spider Eyes in the Nether.
Nether Traders
- Wandering Traders can spawn in the Nether.
- They spawn more often if you're near a Villager.
No OP Villagers
- Replaces some very good Villager trades with worse ones. Diamond tools/armor are replaced with their iron counterparts, and Mending Books are replaced with Unbreaking III Books.
- You can toggle items individually, or set trades to be removed entirely instead of being replaced, by typing "/function no_op_villagers:config".
Splash Drowned
- Throw a Water Splash/Lingering Potion at a Zombie to convert it into a Drowned. There's a chance it doesn't work if the Zombie isn't in water or a filled cauldron. You can tell if a Zombie is converting if it starts shivering.
- Also, adds a chance for converted Drowned to gain naturally-spawned equipment. The chance for this to happen is much higher for Drowned converted using Water Potions than converted the normal way.
- You can disable this chance entirely in the config by typing "/function splash_drowned:config".
Channel Anytime
- Channeling Tridents can always create lightning, even if it isn't thundering and there isn't a clear view of the sky.
End Portal Maker
- Create an End Portal in the Nether. Place a Beacon, then place an Obsidian a block apart from the Beacon in each cardinal direction, then place an End Crystal on each Obsidian. See an example here.
Stone Conversion
- Throw a Channeling Trident at some End Stone and Netherrack on the ground to create Stone.
Mending Books in Bastions
- Small changes to Bastion chest loot: bridge, hoglin stable, and generic chests have a chance to contain Enchanted Books with Soul Speed or Mending.
Hook's Nether Advancements
- A few advancements to act as a simple guide to these datapacks.
So how does it all work?
Here's an explanation of how progression might go. It might be more fun to figure it out for yourself, though.
The main way of obtaining Overworld materials is by trading with Villagers and Wandering Traders.
- Find a Ruined Portal and gather some grass, flowers, and oak or birch saplings. Grow saplings next to flowers for Bee nests to generate. Get Honey Bottles, and farm crops too.
- Find Spider Eyes in Nether fortress chests. Craft the Honey into Sugar and make some Fermented Spider Eyes and then Weakness Potions.
- Find Golden Apples in Ruined Portal or Bastion chests.
- Zombie Villagers can spawn when you attack Zombified Piglins. Cure a Zombie Villager!
- Turn your Villager into something you can trade with. For example, Fletchers can buy Sticks for Emeralds, and Clerics can buy Rotten Flesh from Zombified Piglins for Emeralds.
- Expand your village and farms to get more Emeralds. Find a Wandering Trader and buy some Sugar Cane so you can make a Bookshelf and then a Lectern. Now you can make a Librarian who can sell you Bookshelves. Finally, you can make an Enchanting Table!
- Trade with Villagers and Wandering Traders to get new blocks and crops.
Next, it's time to start thinking about getting to the End.
- You'll have to beat a Wither since a Beacon is required. Good luck with that without Stone to make an Armorer jobsite!
- You can buy the Glass for End Crystals and the Beacon from Librarians.
- Set up the Beacon and End Crystals as shown here. Keep in mind that End Crystals explode.
- Now you have End Stone! And somewhere to put all those Pufferfish Buckets you buy from the Wandering Traders.
Finally, you can get Stone.
- Zombies can spawn when you attack Zombified Piglins.
- Make a bunch of Water Splash Potions. Wandering Traders often sell Gunpowder.
- Throw your potions at Zombies that aren't already holding something. The drop chance for Tridents is the same as vanilla.
- Enchant your Trident with Channeling, then throw it at a stack of Netherrack and a stack of End Stone on the ground.
- Now you have Stone! You can make Pistons, Comparators, Observers, Dispensers, etc.
Why did you remove Mending books from Villager trades?
It seems too easy to have access to Mending as soon as you start a Village in vanilla. I think it's fine to only really get it from chest loot or fishing, since you can find a lot of Mending tools/armor in End Cities. If you don't agree, there's an option to change it.
Why did you put Mending books in Bastions?
Even though I think the Mending tools/armor you get in End Cities is usually enough, there are some things, like Elytra and Tridents, that would be impossible to put Mending on without books. So there should be some way to get a few Mending books. Also, Bastion loot sucks, and with the addition of the Piglin Brute, it became even harder to get. It seemed like a good way to make Bastions actually worth your time.
