Here, the crosshair updates to hide only after changing the targeted block after moving the player character to block the placement. (alternatively crouching, jumping, pause/unpause, chat open/close updates the crosshair)

the same happens for these types of blocks:
doors
glass panes
beds
chests
brewing stand
stonecutter
pots
bamboo
flowers
lecterns
melon/pumpkin stems
trapdoors
grass paths' edges
gates and fences

(seems to be all blocks of unconventional shapes, these are the ones i tested to confirm)

Thank you for the detailed report!

There's two different bugs at play here. The first one (placing inside of a non-solid block) is a weird one that I will have to investigate more thoroughly. The second one (moving doesn't update the crosshair properly) I have fixed in 8.1.
