I like this idea...but the paper tech tree seems limited in vanilla MineCraft. One you have stacks and stacks of paper, where do you see it going?

Hadn't though of that. Well, I use books for Mystcraft, but I don't know what others might do with it. Maybe an aspiring author can write a bunch of novels with the upcoming writable books? Either way, just an idea.

Maybe paper lanterns? Or fireworks? Filters? Printers? Although I don't know how filters would be used and correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not sure any of those fit in with the forestry theme.

I actually think paper lanterns would be nice, since we really don't have a good, block-sized illumination source that isn't butt-ugly like glowstone or pumpkins, and redstone lanterns require multiple items to use.
And they could be hung from ropes made of bark! :D

its a nice idea, but there is no much use for paper. its only needed for books and maps.

what we need is more use for paper. @blargh555 did a lot of nice suggestions. sails for boats/ships could be possible, too.

I think there's a mod out there that does wallpaper already (or at least used to be). I never tried it though. My concern is that anything you stick on a wall would be taking up a block, and make it impossible to add torches, levers, or things like that. I think before we do wallpaper, we need a solution for that.

EDIT: Found the existing wallpaper mod. It looks like they did find a way to not take up a second block, somehow, so it is doable. Also, I didn't look into this entirely, but it looks like maybe that the original isn't being continued any more, and permission has been given for others to maintain it, in which case it might be possible to borrow the base for repurposing.

I highly suggest making bunyan wood types compatible with the other tech mods, especially Thermal expansion which allows you to chip logs and turn those wood chips into paper.

Thermal Expansion compatibility is in the next official release.

OK...so we have two mods that can transform wood to pulp/sawdust to paper.

I think this is good enough for this requirement. I think it wold be more valuable with some kind of paper tech tree, but, I don't know that "Better Paper" is within the scope of ExtrabiomesXL. Perhaps someone reading this has the time or motivation to do such a mod?

Carpenter from Forestry can produce Paper from Wood Pulp. Wood Pulp can be crafted from "woodLog".

I really hope that Jeb or EvilSeph has the time/motivation ... :-)

Make them like fences, but using paper. Maybe a blank screen can get a pattern on it by crafting it with a flower (giving more use to the different flowers and ground cover as well)...say, pattern screens mix with other screens of the same pattern to make bigger designs, and with blank screens for breaks and transitions? Could even throw in the paper doors that are a part of that style, though those traditionally slide, so they might have to be crafted different (and take up twice the space) Maybe craft them with nine screens?

...I'd feel a little guilty stealing ideas I gave to someone else back, but on the other hand there's no harm in having them available as a stand-alone by someone else for people who don't want the whole "big mod" package too, I suppose. Anyways, the ones that would be most relevant are the scroll ideas (especially since Mystcraft has its own "Lectern" that works sort of like I wanted...though it can't display normal writing...actually can we implement an override for that item with more functions?).

I absolutely love the ideas of the paper building materials...you could make a Japanese style house. The idea of using flowers and other plants to make images on the shoji screens would be amazing. Or have them be a part of it and create a shadow type affect. They are used to create wall panels as well as the screens. The sliding door would be cool as well. Maybe even something like they do in the Secret Door mod. Dyes could also be used to color them. It would be really nice if they could be made translucent.

Use dye to dye paper to use for wallpaper? Maybe not the cheapest way of decorating, but it would save on other tool usage for having to mine stone in an underground base to replace with wool.

Although I suppose the question then would be, how to stick in to the stone.

Maybe pulp from the paper? What are you thinking...like a panel or cover from RP or a carpet tile?

I like this idea alot....so I looked up what other uses paper can have other than thing like books or to write on. I found this and was very surprised at some of the things it can be used for.

Paper tech:

1. Armor. Same defense as iron, higher enchantability, lower durability.
   Recipe: 9 paper => solid paper block.
   Then arrange solid paper blocks just like iron to make armor.
2. Trade goods at the library.
3. Filters ... Hmm ... maybe wasteland water could be filtered to regular water?

Ohh, and the filtered "gunk" could either turn dirt to grass, or some other new block to dirt? (Do you have any new surface blocks that are not quite dirt -- I thought I saw that idea in the main thread, but it might have been in the other big biome mod thread.)
