@ScottKillen

I like this idea. Please discuss your vision and how you think it should work. Keep in mind that it is not possible to add roots to vanilla trees without jar edits.

@stertingen

i will keep this in mind, and i do not like this fact.
roots will be tree-specific (of course) and made of normal log.
smaller trees can be like they are now, maybe the logs go 1-2 blocks deeper in the ground.
larger trees (legend oak) will get a "log network" underground. it will look a bit like the over-ground-side of the tree (forgot the right word) without leaves. (roots going through caves will look epic, or on cliffs*).
the roots will be generated with the trees like the tree itself (belonging to the tree). uhm...
maybe they can have parts of the roots over the ground?

*cliffs: roots at cliffs need to be a bit different (http://namibsands.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/newlands_forest_roots.jpg)

as you can see, i am not a root specialist. sorry for that.

@ScottKillen

Excellent! Thanks for the comments!

@Lambastificate

Maybe at a certain height limit, you could bind the roots to the terrain, but below that, they could extend through the air. Potentially some very cool labyrinthine groves.
BTW, Scott, I've downloaded both ExtraBiomesXL and Bunyan, and I've been observing your interactions with users, and you have got to be one of the most patient, amazing modders I've ever seen. I made an account on GitHub to tell you this. And also to provide feedback for Bunyan, which is a REALLY awesome mod.

@ScottKillen

@Lambastificate Thank you very much! I hope Bunyan can continue to give you lots of entertainment.

Some roots have been added to the trees added last fall, the Rainbow Eucalyptus and Bald Cypress. We will look at adding more types of roots to other trees as well in future releases.

Maybe steal from Twilight Forest here. Make roots a different block that grows under the trees.

@keybounce I was thinking something somewhat similar. I'm not sure how to work the detection, but this might be another place where our idea of a universal substitution block could come into play. Given much more limited spread, could we set something up so that logs connected to natural leaves (those subject to despawn) will produce a limited network of "Rooted Soil/Grass" around the tree, which takes longer to harvest (and possibly outright requires a shovel), but which yields not only dirt (or perhaps only dirt clods) but also sticks? I think whole logs from roots would be a bit of a stretch.

You might want to look at the LCTrees as well. Some of Nightshades trees have roots that go down quite a ways....I think mainly the desert ones. Another mod that does roots on some of the trees is Big Trees. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/782646-132-bigtrees-132b-with-bwg3-111-patch/

The tree I think of first when I think roots is the magrove tree. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mangrove That would make for an interesting biome...you could even make houses within the root system if we could find a way to not chop down the whole tree when clearing out the roots. http://www.climateshifts.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/mangrove0459sm.jpg If you google images of mangroves you'll see the variety of root structures they have.

@Annysia Love it!

Well, how about just the average time to break of a grass block plus a wood block, and a minimum tool of wood shovel -- bare hands has the wrong tool time penalty.

Seems reasonable, @keybounce

I've been thinking of this for a while now and think that it may come in handy for displaying roots and/or branches for trees.

What if a wood block could be added that had the two cut wood sides adjacent to each other instead of opposite.
This would allow for log pieces to come sideways out of a trunk without the cut side showing on corner pieces that indicate a turn upward or downward (maybe even sideways). Essentially this would be the opposite of a quarter-log

Interesting Dan...
