Big fan of this as Mountain ridges are the first place I go on a new map.
Already loving having the bricks and cobblestone!
To clarify: I want to be able to make tools and furnaces with Red cobblestone. They don't have to look red, just like sticks don't change color with the wood, or bed with the wool.
maybe the furnace, being also a furniture item, should come in a red
version if possible (not really necessary though). other tools are
just fine as standard tools.

The real reason you need normal tools and furnace is this:
What color is a furnace with 5 cobble and 3 red cobble?
What if I draw a checker pattern in the crafting table?
Or, think of this: All wood tools, doors, fences, etc, look the same no matter what color wood is used.
Yea, I know, doors and fences might get colored. Not tools :-).

Seems better to post here than open a new issue.
How about a bricked version of Cracked Sand? Essentially, four CS to make something like adobe. Similar to Sandstone in properties, lacks CS's spread behaviour, similar look to Nether Brick with a lighter colour. It might make a good material for some of the new villages.

to be more specific, here are the blocks that should be added (mirroring cobblestone, stone, red bricks):
red cobblestone stairs
red cobblestone slab
red brick stairs
red brick slab
